Miniature and Illumination

The miniature is rooted from Latin word (minium) that means ocher. Since the Middle Ages, the art of illumination has been very simple. This sample was used to decorate books that were made with using herbal pigments.

The miniature word meaning is a smaller representation which is rooted from French word (natural miniatures). This word came from Qajar period in Persian language. Research has shown that this art was originally born in Iran and then was taken to China and has returned to Iran from the Mongols ever more fully.

A miniature artist is a painter who paints everything which sees or the miniaturist does not have to adhere to any drawing framework interests in seeing it, and is not in any way subject to the rules and the painting framework. The Seljuk Turks are likely to spread this method in Iran, but the Iranians have combined the Chinese painting with their own special art, for example, the beautiful tiles left over from that time point to this truth. Herat School was a thriving period of art as at the time 60 art professors were engaged in a painting school. One of the most famous professors of that period is Professor Kamal al-Din Behzad. In the Safavid period there were Tabriz and Isfahan trainings, Tabriz training was very similar to the Herat school, but the school of Esfahan had undergone significant changes, and the obvious example is the Isfahan mosque and the Chehel-Soton palace and the majestic mansion of Ali Qapu. Among the most famous painters of this period was Reza Abbasi, who lived in the time of Shah Abbas, who was a painter himself. During this period, they separated from the Chinese and the ancient’s trainings and increased the decorative designs to about 50 types of Islamic floral and special patterns. With using of a shadow to this art, Shiraz training came into being. Except this, there is no particular difference with the Safavid training. The Qajar training flourished from Fathali Shahperiod. This training follows the Shiraz school and there is a perspective that originates from Iranian and European paintings. Professor, Mahmoud Khan Malek al-Shoaraye Saba has been living at the same time.

After coming back from Italy and France, Kamal al-Mulk did not want to accept the style of Impressionism and followed the style of the Renaissance professors, and because of this, at the art school he founded, the style of the Qajar artists was destroyed. But after the fall of the Qajar, Iranian painting was divided into two distinct categories. The first category was the students of Kamal al-Mulk who were inspired by nature, such as Hossein Ali Vaziri, Ali Heidarian and Hasan Sheikh. The second was the ones who painted oil paintings, (small miniatures, or big boards), and their subjects were often national issues. In the same years, the former Kamal al-Molk school and the National Conservatory were re-established, all of which led to the creation of the Ministry of Culture and Guidance.

Contemporary professors such as Mahmoud Farshchian, Ali Motie, Ali Zavieh, etc. are among those who have been trained at Kamal-ol-Molk school, each of which has trained many students who are very famous in miniature art.

Today, the city of Isfahan is the heart of miniature art. Famous artists in the field show their skills.

Illumination(gilding) for decorative objects

The allegorical paintings of birds and animals with the branches, flowers, leaves, and Islamic lines form an important part of the miniature, which is called the Illumination that decorated around the pictures and texts.

Therefore, the illumination includes the art of decorating and decorating linear books. A special way to create designs with a solution of gold and silver, which includes regular Islamic and geometric lines.

In the art of illumination, natural colors were used, but nowadays the same colors are used in addition, watercolor and postal color and a solution of gold and silver, which is, of course, the main colors of the illumination. The background color of this art is usually blue. Today, we are dealing with two types of gilding: the first form of illumination whose artists work accordance with traditional principles and do not perceive the structure (motifs, flower and bird patterns, traditional and Islamic patterns and …), the second category is gilding with modern patterns or combined both, that the second type is More updated. Of course, the artist has preferred to combine these two types of art and create   unique and special works.

Flower and bird panel or picture

This style is considered as an Iranian style of Persian art. Flowers and Chicken are the symbol of divine grace and the delicate manifestation of the Creator. In a way, the love story of flowers and chicken is similar to God’s prayer. The flower has the status of a beloved and the bird has a lover’s status.

But in fact, flower and chicken painting is a term used to describe a kind of old Iranian painting. Flowers and birds come from the ninth century AH in Iranian painting. But they were individually painted in the 11th century AH and later on. During the Zand period, there was a kind of art as a flower training or a Zand training in Shiraz, because it was the focus of flower and chicken paintings and the legacy of this art was transferred to Qajar period. Flowers and Chicken are used in many arts in various fields of tiling, mirror works, jewelry box, textiles and pencil case. the first artists to draw flowers and chicken can be named Mohammad Zaman and Shafi Abbasi.

I use in floral and chicken boards from Steinbach Cardboard, Fabriano Cardboard, parchment, lint, postal color, watercolor and brush. In this way, I will remove the design on the parchment and correct the bugs, then put the design carefully on the cardboard. After this step, I add the details to the sketch and set the color of the background from the combination of postal colors. Colors should be made according to the type of design. Processing and fixing bugs with brush No 4 zero and after the general steps are done, the artwork is framed.
